Insulators are designed to separate the contact network of a trolleybus or tram into sections, the so-called. sections. Each section is powered by a separate feeder, which makes it possible to repair individual sections without de-energizing the entire contact network, and to power these sections from different traction substations. The main task of a sectional insulator is to ensure reliable insulation of sections, without limiting the ability of current collectors to pass through it.
The main obstacle to this is the electric arc that occurs when the current collector passes through. To reduce the impact of the arc, an arc suppression device consisting of a coil and an arc chamber is used. When an arc is formed, it is carried away by the magnetic field of the arc extinguishing coil into the arc extinguishing chamber, where it is stretched, cooled and extinguished.
